Name Class Date Sharks-the Keystone Predators in the Ocean Ecosystem Keystone species are basically those species that have a rather disproportionate effect and influence on a given ecosystem. The influence is usually so huge that were the organism to be eliminated the whole system would fall into disarray. The animals described as keystone affect many other organisms; and consequently help in the determination of the types and numbers of the different organisms and species existing in an ecosystem. The keystone species may be an animal or species would degenerate to smaller body size over time and will be more prone to illnesses as described in the laws of natural selection. The depletion of the habitats and pastures would directly and indirectly affect other species too meaning that the whole system falls into an imbalance. To this effect as predators at the top the sharks are key in maintaining the balance in marine ecosystems. This balance is maintained by direct predation as well as behavior mediated influences of the sharks on other species. [...]
