The Role of Women in the Western Wing Zi Wang WRIT 3200 Dr. Shores 9/30/2017 The story of the Western Wing is a traditional Chinese play written by Shifu Wang. The story has become very popular and famous in the present day society and that explains why it has been rewritten many times. In brief the story is about the love union and separation of two young adults who tried to consummate their marriage without the approval of their parents. From the storyline the young scholar Zhang was interested in becoming a civil servant. While travelling to the city for civil servants exam Zhang met with Oriole the daughter of the prime minister. Zhang and Oriole fell in love from first sight. The mother of Oriel wanted her to marry a wealthy man but as fate would have she became engaged to Zhang. Despite Zhang saving them the mother characters had similarities and differences and that was used to bring a successful play and comedy. The role of these characters has made the play more popular in the present day society. Similarly the play had influenced the development of other plays and also brought about drama critisms.
