Document 1

At eleven years old, he was called nigger by school kids. A name that felt so offensive since it was used by hateful southerners and slave owners to refer to black slaves. The author says the word nigger hits like buckets of cold water and it forced them to fear interacting with people in the neighborhood. The author also talks about cultural appropriation and its negative impact in the society while promoting racism. In an experience narrated by the author, most lounges and restaurants rebrand their businesses with African names but the food and services offered in those lounges are not African. These micro-aggressions include insults and indignities perpetrated against marginalized or oppressed people in the society. The author describes how theses insults have affected young black girls in academic institutions.
