English Language - Mini Research Paper, Research Paper
The drama paper is a mini-research paper, analyzing the drama we're reading; "A DOLL'S HOUSE" BY HENRIK IBSEN! it's mini because for a short paper, the maximum number of sources you use should not exceed the page length requirement, and I am really only requiring you to use one peer-reviewed article. I've created a list of sample ideas, below, so that as you read, you can be shaped by these ideas and some of the suggestions in our text in the literary research paper section or in the Writing About Drama section. Read the play thoroughly, highlighting important dialogue, study the terminology, and come to class to discuss the play. Review and read literary criticism in the library in books and online through the databases before you seek the literature guides available online, since those may be of a significantly lesser value. Do read some of the commentary online. In your short paper, answer one of the following questions:
1.Compare and contrast two scholarly approaches, developing criteria for evaluation, such as characterization, dialogue, setting, and scene, to help illustrate the thematic similarities or the value differences.
2.Identify the art of the time period and the ways current movements in art influenced Ibsen in the writing of this play, which relies upon realism to make its case to an audience -- show the realism and work from the history of art perspective to argue for/talk about Ibsen's innovations in this play;
3.Compare and contrast the ideas of the play and an outside source describing problems in contemporary feminism that relate to the play, developing criteria for evaluation, such as characterization, dialogue, setting, and scene, to help illustrate the thematic similarities or the value differences. Argumentative thesis required.
4.Identify the character development in the play and discuss what it reveals to you about difficult situations such as the history of relations between men and women. Use one outside source to help you make the case for your thesis. This paper should be argumentative, not descriptive.
5.Domestic environments often shed light on larger problems in a society, as we have noted. Is there another problem besides gender-related power struggles that also comes to light through this play? Identify the issue and explore the point you want to make through supporting passages that serve to bolster your argumentative thesis. Use one outside source to support your points.
6.Is there simply a problem in language between the characters in this play, or does the language point toward underlying problems in power and equality? Use one outside source that analyzes linguistic differences between men and women to make your point. Support with an analytical source that examines the dialogue and linguistics of the play.
7.If there is something else you would like to focus on, please let me know! We are trying to deal with values, ethics, and problems within our society with this paper -- the broader sense of how literature provides commentary on these elements -- so let me know if there is some other angle that interests you. Present your idea with the first week of December, including the argument you will make and supporting research that bolsters your view.
