Unit Two

Each activity will be based on authors, works, and topics covered in the current unit. Even though certain activities (such as those requiring a blueprint submission) will be worth more points than others (such as those requiring multiple artifact suggestions), students should always put forth their best effort. As for blueprint submissions, students should demonstrate original and sound scholarship, should exhibit current MLA guidelines (citation, quotation management, etc.), and should indicate attention to detail (grammar, mechanics, etc.). In each instance, students should develop a distinct and thorough submission: focused thesis (clear and concise), several supporting examples (obtained from pertinent readings), and sound interpretation (analysis as opposed to synopsis). If a student does not complete a discussion activity prior to the corresponding deadline then she/he will receive a zero. The late submission policy is non-negotiable. What you need to do! :Identify one unifying topic (issue, idea, or theme) that is conveyed in the Unit One assigned readings. Submissions should demonstrate (not explain) one's approach. Your submission should exemplify an analysis (interpretation) of the narratives instead of a synopsis (summary) of the works. Visit Purdue OWL for information about thesis statements and close readings. You should use examples from at least three of the assigned readings. Create a blueprint (outline, concept map, etc.) in order to organize and convey your argument. Save the file (PDF or RTF). Post the name of the topic (issue, idea, or theme) in the subject line. Attach the file (PDF or RTF). Submit post. If you are building a website or creating a Prezi, provide a hyperlink to the project instead of attaching a file. If you are creating a Prezi, please ensure that you post a valid URL. If the URL you submit features an "edit" tag, others will not be able to access it. A correct shared URL should feature "share" and "copy" tags. Textbook: Read the following works: Zora Neale Hurston – “Sweat” (1926) John Steinbeck – “The Chrysanthemums” (1937) Ralph Ellison – “Battle Royal” (1948) Flannery O’Connor – “Good Country People” (1955) (-Proofread and edit your text (grammar, mechanics, etc.). -Use quotation marks when referring to short story titles. -First, tighten the scope of the unifying topic. What specific social or cultural reality do the authors, collectively, address? Next, refine the thesis. Use the quicklinks (thesis and close reading) provided within the list of discussion topic instructions when developing a thesis and a formal argument. For instance, the external conflict that occurs in each story is obvious. Instead of focusing on the presence of conflict, ask yourself: what is one prominent idea about conflict that each of the authors convey? -Use a consistent topic sentence approach when initiating (beginning), transitioning (seguing), and concluding (ending). Review all narrative sections and revise accordingly. -Revise your interpretation of each work. Remember: devote more space to analysis (interpretation) and less space to synopsis (plot summary). -Generate more content (all three narratives). Develop a more thorough and in-depth analysis section for each work. Your discussion of each work should represent a substantive reasoned argument (literary analysis) as opposed to a brief personal musing (journal or diary). A fundamental pattern to use when developing an analysis is as follows: introduce the work; provide context; assert primary claim; frame and provide textual evidence; supply commentary; repeat multiple times until you have sufficiently developed and supported (via evidence and commentary) your argument. Refer to the example blueprint or the example projects. Each example illustrates sound analysis. -Try to incorporate one or two brief quotes per narrative. -Parenthetically cite all direct evidence (summaries, paraphrases, and quotes). Review each paragraph and provide page numbers based on the course packet.)
Each activity will be based on authors, works, and topics covered in the current unit.
