Document Preview:

Alejandro Valencia Profesor Course 23rd September 2017. ‘The Temptest’ In Norton Shakespeare’s play The Temptest there are several characters that are portrayed as barbarians. From the prologue question one should answer the question “Who is the civilized man and who is the barbarian?” From different perspectives every man of the island had both aspects included in the question. In the modern world that we exist in Caliban can be considered as the barbarian whereas Prospero can be perceived as the civilized man. From time to time Caliban exemplifies immoral acts which can at times be horrifying. Considering that he was bored out of a witch’s womb Caliban gets highly considered as the barbarian. The mother to Caliban was known as Sycorax and had been exiled to an island for carrying out horrible and witchcraft activities. When Prospero alighted at uncivilized for his request and this clearly shows that many people viewed Caliban as Barbaric. At some point Trinculo claims Caliban “A howling monster a drunken monster” (Greenblatt and Walter 3090). The two men play along with Caliban and even plan to kill Prospero but it does not work out. In the end all men leave the island and leave Caliban gets left behind since he was tired of being viewed as barbarian by the multitude. It gets easy to call him as barbaric but on the other hand it gets eminent that this was brought about by his upbringing hence one cannot blame him. However in the play Caliban is the barbarian whereas Prospero seems to be the civilized person.
