What problems arose between the men and the women in the movement
Document Type:Coursework
Subject Area:Cultural Studies
In the Young Lords group, for instance, women like Gloria Gonzales engaged in clean-ups, health clinics, and community education. The Chicanas fought for their social justice as well as that of their people, some even sporting the Brown Beret uniform and going for marches and strikes. Various became active leaders. However, not all movements embraced their participation or leadership or regarded them as equal. The men in the Young Lords, for instance, thought it unsuitable for women to hold such position. Alternatively, they could work in sweet shops, as sex objects or take care of babies. Women did not want to tolerate the less-than-equal treatment and discrimination. They came together to push for the agenda of their leadership where they shared experiences and affirmed themselves.
