Write an essay (research paper) of your own in which you reckon with a chosen, primary text (one of the stories or books that we have read this semester) and its ideas. To do so, you must deepen our understanding of that original book or story’s value and significance. At the same time, you must question that text’s perspective, examining and underlining the significance of possible limitations in its idea-making. You should reckon with this chosen text across your essay, through your analysis of that text and in the context of (at least) one other source. This unique source (a secondary source) will offer you different angles and perspectives by which to consider the question(s) you’ve developed about the original text’s (the primary source) ideas. Put this secondary source into conversation with your original text.
To be clear, the primary source is one of the stories or books that we had read and analyzed in the class thus far—Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Kurt Vonnegut & Yusef Komunyakaa. The secondary source is something (another book, a film, a newspaper article, a web site, an on-line article, an interview, etc.) that you will employ in order to further investigate the primary source.
As you consider these sources in conversation, YOU must evaluate and weigh their arguments. Ultimately, your voice and your mind interest me most. Use your analysis of the sources (both primary and secondary) in relationship to each other to thoughtfully develop an idea of your own—an idea that responds to your evaluation of the primary source. You must develop this idea across the essay—from the beginning, through a line of reasoning that extends across the middle, to the fullest articulation of your idea and its significance in your ending (conclusion).
Remember that you must work with each text in whole and in part: you must introduce and present the overarching ideas and context of the text, and you must take us to discrete parts of the text, parts you choose judiciously to help build up your analysis. You must then make clear how these texts work in relationship to each other.
Finally, remember that persuasion is an art. Compel me to read your essay and accept the value of your ideas by revealing the liveliness of your mind.
++You must grapple with one of the stories that we have read this year and at least one other piece of evidence (source) in your essay (research paper).
++6-8 typed pages, double-spaced. 3-5 In-text Citations. Follow all MLA formatting and citation guidelines.
