A Comparison between Peking and European Opera Student’s Name University Affiliation Date A Comparison between Peking and European Opera Introduction An opera is a form of art that incorporates poetry drama music plastic arts singing and dances to entertain an audience. The real essence of opera is the expression of beauty and the expressiveness in it. Fans of opera see it as an extraordinary show as it monopolizes imagination sight sensibility and hearing of the audience thus engulfing all the human passions. Peking opera is a typical Chinese opera dating back in history about two hundred years ago. It has a combination of vocal performance music dance mime and acrobatics. Originally it was coined in the 18th century but was fully developed in the 19th century where it gained worldwide recognition. Commonly it is referred to as Jingxi or Pingju in Chinese and it is the most influencing form primarily written to help in story telling while music aims at organizing the sound and the rhythm. Composers do write music in the best ways possible to tell a story. They do this for music singers and instruments while librettists are responsible for writing words in an opera. Peking and European operas are from two different worlds and have differences and similarities. They both represent differences in cultures but in common they both illustrate a story through music.
