The delinquents are minors whose age ranges between ten and eighteen and have committed offenses. The crimes committed by the minors are not classified as crimes as the adults but are considered to be delinquent acts (Lehrer, Eli p 17). The juvenile delinquents are adjudicated instead of trial. The adult proceedings are quite different from the juvenile proceedings. Taking the type of crime committed into consideration, the juveniles can be tried and punished as adults (Lehrer, Eli p 17). Most juvenile offenders display antisocial behaviours before reaching adolescence once they have committed various offences and the judgments tend to help psychologically. Some of juvenile are serious. The offences need intervention as early as possible to prevent further harm to the offender and the offender.

The crimes that can be considered very serious are those that are committed against other people or involve destruction of property. Delinquency prevention and intervention procedures are involved in ensuring that the incidences of crime are decreased. The offences can also be status offenses. The juvenile delinquents can also be categorized into two major types (Rozzell, Liane Gay p 15). The offenders include the persistent offenders, who begin committing crimes during their adolescence and continue with the behaviour into adulthood. Others are age specific offenders who are destined to commit crimes within a particular age and change as they progress to adulthood. The persistent offenders are more likely to have the antisocial behaviour from adolescence to adulthood. The juvenile proceedings can be either formal or informal.

The first juvenile court was set up in the late 19th century and was separated from the adult courts. Currently, all states in the United States have separate juvenile courts that help in solving juvenile delinquencies (Campaign for Youth Justice p. The courts handle two different types of cases the status offender and delinquent offenders. Delinquent children are children who have committed crimes for adults under the United States. P7). Alternatively juvenile can also be subjected to community service order whereby they engage in unpaid work for considerably long period of time. The juveniles are can also be detained for committing various crimes. For detention, the youths must be between sixteen and seventeen years and are taken into the young offenders institutions.
