Notably, the people’s interpretation of the changes was a conspiracy although they were geared towards making political and economic transformations. Therefore, the poem "On independence 1776" is relevant to the history of Americans in their pursuit of happiness because it explicitly elucidates the events that transpired in American after the colonial era. The author describes how he perceives America as a country and the Americans at large. The mood that prevails in the poem is that of war to restore that which the people had lost and defended their property and liberty. The writer sees the course of as a self-righteous move that aimed at protecting the country from monsters, tyrannical rule and laws and creation of Free states. The author gives women a sense of purpose in the war and dispels that notion that women did not show any patriotism.

Women in that era participated in patriotic actions like boycotting British goods. Besides, they called forth the Philadelphian women who together they formed a movement that did door to door campaigns and collected funds for the army. In the pursuit of happiness by the American people, women contributed significantly to this course. However, in the course of the fight, the Americans had to give up many things including their luxurious to attain the greater goal. She describes how the American troops marched on the land that had been invaded and drove the invaders out of it. Her feeling of the sight she witnessed was of affection for his country and people, pity and gratitude. Notably, even the soldiers had worn, they were returning home to ashes as they sang songs of victory.
