Acting rationally can be defined in numerous terms but simply stated it is the act of making decisions by being devoid of all emotions at the expense of being logical. The perennial agreement among both sociologists and psychologists is that ultimately, acting rationally is the application and implementation of objective thinking, scientific methodologies and logical derivations among other factors in making decisions. In stark contrast, the application of emotions or feelings in coming to conclusions is regarded as irrationality. Generally, the universal acceptable construct of being rational is primarily thinking before acting. From the definitions above it may be inferred that the application of emotions is being discouraged however, that is not the case. However, consulting a profession such as a social worker and talking to the parents and mentors is considered a rational act.

By considering the inputs and situations that may arise as a result of the action to be taken will allow for a better decision to be made which will be beneficial to all parties. According to Kohlberg, rationality is a direct link to morality. That said, an act is deemed to be rational when a person has delved into and considered all facts as best as possible without having any emotional attachment before coming to a conclusion. These facts are based on a person’s moral values. These benefits are wholesomely, for the betterment of the human species having taken into consideration of the future generations. Advantages of acting rationally Rationale decision making ensures that the chances of anomalies occurring is minimized while the chances of positive results is achieved.

By making a rational decision, one is more assured and guaranteed of making a detailed decision that takes into consideration the needs of all the parties involved. Acting rationally is on principal that the task at hand is broken down into smaller problems and that all possible solutions have been considered before making a decision. It also entails addressing the most complex issues firstly before delving into the less complex issues. These decisions are as a result of careful consideration and data analysis which takes a lot of time. Critics argue that, in making decisions that are life-dependent and needed prompt, one should consider other methodologies. In the current world, things are changing rapidly and as a result acting rationally is unattainable in most issues.

The steps involved together with the time needed in order to make detailed decisions is not available in the modern world. Decisions need to be made promptly in order to keep up with the everchanging world. Hence, all persons are encouraged to continuously adhere to the principles of rational thinking over the temptations of acting irrationally which is perceived to be selfish and individualistic. In conclusion, acting on impulse and making rush decisions mainly contribute to a large percentage of the problems being experienced today. The actions of the previous generations, centuries or decades ago, are consequential to our current state and so does the fate of the future generations dwell in our hands. Cognitively, we are not able to change the past, little can be done about our present but the future is dependent on our actions.
