Typically when we think of cultures, we think of different countries or ethnic groups, but we actually are members of many different cultures right here in this country. Your Interpersonal Communication text talks about culture in Chapter 2, and then also talks about culture throughout most of the chapters. Your book defines culture as: “the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people (values, beliefs, artifacts, ways of behaving) that is passed from one generation to the next by means of communication (not genes).” This definition shows that culture has MUCH more to do than just your race, nationality, or ethnic group.
It may help you to review your submission from Week 2 for the assignment titled "My Cultures" in order to refresh your memory of some cultures you are a part of.
To complete this paper, follow the two steps outlined below.
STEP ONE: For this paper, you are to first choose a culture that you associate yourself with or that you feel you are a part of. Remember, this cannot include your racial or ethnic background. Here is a listing of possibilities – you may not fit into any of these cultures, but hopefully this will help you think about what cultures you are a part of. You do not have to choose one of these - this list is just to help you start brainstorming something that fits you.

STEP TWO: Once you decide on the specific culture that you're a part of that you’d like to focus on, your second (and most important) task is to imagine that someone is about to enter that culture for the first time and the only thing that they will review beforehand is your final paper for this class. You must choose at least SIX of the areas below to talk about with regards to the culture you’ve chosen. Explain and describe this culture in your paper using the areas you choose below. For example, if you chose the culture of being an Atlanta Braves fan, and if one of your six areas is Gestures/Nonverbal Communication you could talk about how fans do the "tomahawk chop" at ballgames. Describe HOW that culture specifically and uniquely uses those actions and WHY they are important to that culture or WHAT purpose do they serve. Choose 6 of the following to cover:

· Space (i.e. personal space) / Proxemics
· Touch Communication / Haptics
· Communication channels
· Time / Temporal Communication
· Paralanguage / Silence
· Language / Verbal Communication

Along with covering the 6 areas you choose to talk about with regards to the culture, you will also need introductory and concluding paragraphs for your paper. Your paper needs to be no less than 3 pages in a 10 point, Times Roman font.
Your introduction paragraph should include: (1) why you chose this culture, (2) a brief definition of this culture, and (3) how you associate yourself with the culture and/or why you are a part of that culture. Your conclusion paragraph should: (1) give a brief summary of your paper and (2) wrap up your thoughts.
In the body of the paper, divide the areas you talk about with underlined headings for that section. For example, if one of the areas I choose to talk about is dress, then where I write about that will have a heading that looks like this:
