Personally I believe that it is important to have a general idea of an area before you can make a specific choice and the course highlights nearly every essential aspect of aviation. Areas covered in the course range from airline-related to international business, IT, economics and even finance. Thus, on completion of the course, I aspire to work in the management section of airlines where I can be able to apply the aforementioned knowledge. This will allow me to actively contribute to the management and strategy development of airlines. Nonetheless, I do understand that success in aviation management will go beyond academics and will require other soft skills such as good interaction and understanding of people. uk, 2019). Like any other career, aviation management will require a person to be constantly communicating with colleagues and other individuals within and outside the company.

However, in order to reach the desired communication goal as a manager, the message needs to be well-articulated and shows that the manager understands his/her emotions. Also, the message needs to show that the manager understands the sentiments of the audience. This demands an ability that is referred to as emotional intelligence (EI) which means the skill of identifying and controlling one’s emotions while at the same time understanding that of the audience or subjects. The last section, the unknown, is dedicated for those adjectives that neither the subject nor the peers identify. Once complete, the subject can review the answers and act on it appropriately since they will have a better understanding of themselves (Wilson, 2008).

In relation to my career, I believe that it is important for me to have a good understanding of myself so that I can improve my relationship with everyone in the practice. Thus, I will need to apply the aforementioned models. The score on this area is attributed to my desire to always learn more where the contribution of people plays a key role. I have come to appreciate the uniqueness of experience of each individual hence the likelihood of people having different perspectives. This is also reflected on receiving feedback where I also score highly. However, I have a big weakness in assertiveness where I believe my effectiveness is average. On the EI Assessment, I scored a total of 90 out of the maximum 120 points in all the three areas namely Social Emotional Awareness, Emotional Management and Emotional Awareness.

This argument is supported by Shitu et al. , (2018) who point out that poor communication between health personnel and patients are the most common contributors of medication error. Similar sentiments are shared in other fields particularly aviation. According to Dos Santos, Vieira and Morais (2014), most of the incidents and accidents in aviation are a result of poor communication among operators. They add the communication skills should be regarded as equally important to technical skills. Enhancing Competence From the two audits used, I can single out several areas that I would wish to improve. However, there are two main ones that I would prioritize. These are my presentation skills and managing emotions. The aviation industry is arguably one of the busiest sectors hence can be stressful most of the time.

According to Gopinath (2011), work-related stress has a big impact on a person’s emotions and can ultimately cause a reduction in productivity or evoke inter-personal issues within the workplace. Poonamallee et al. (2018), propose the Dharma Life Program as an appropriate technique to improve emotional intelligence which can among other things self-management, self-control and self-awareness. Improvement of these areas will have a direct impact on my ability to stick to my goals, understand the emotions of other people better and finally stay composed regardless of the emotions. Conclusion The aim of the paper was to focus on effective communication particularly in aviation management. The areas covered in the paper include emotional intelligence where it has been noted to be critical when it comes to effective communication.
