review and critique of a film, with the review focusing on the role of place
Students are required to write a 5-page double-spaced review and critique of a film, with the review focusing on the role of place. The structure of the paper should be divided into three parts as follows: 1) a one page summary of the film; and 2) a critique of the role of place in the film. The following questions are intended to guide you through this part of the exercise: Where did the film occur? How important was the location to the storyline? What did you learn about this place because of the film? Do you feel this place was misrepresented in any way? If so, how? If not, why not? Also, try to identify aspects of the film that helped to depict the place (e.g architecture, clothing, landscapes); and 3) ADDITIONALLY, SHOW HOW ASPECTS OF THE FILM TIE INTO AT LEAST 2 THEMES DISCUSSED IN THE TEXT. BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE AND BE SURE TO REFERENCE THE THEMES THAT YOU USE, I.E. AUTHOR/PAGE #. Your grade will be largely based on how well you discuss the role of place and how it connects to course themes. You may include such things as: the political/economic climate at the time, architecture, clothes, food, street scenes, as well as cultural elements such as the role of gender, religion, or anything else that might be relevant to the storyline as well as how well you connect the film to course themes. Here are a few suggestions: Central Station, Whisky, Pescador, White Light, Amores Perros, City of God, Strawberry and Chocolate, Guantanamera, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Amores Perros, Maria Full of Grace, Sugar, Rudo y Cursi, Sin Nombre, Behind the Sun, Mujeres Infieles, Like Water for Chocolate, House of Sand, Bus 174, God is Brazilian, The Holy Girl, The Headless Woman, La Cienaga, and many, many more. FINAL PAPERS SHOULD BE NO LESS THAN 5 PAGES BUT NO MORE THAN 6.
