Music - concert review , Research Paper

Description: During the course you will attend a live concert performance or watch a filmed live concert performance of your choice and submit a concert review. If you intend to do the Live Concert Review, you MUST attend the concert during this term (not last year, not last summer). There are no exceptions to this. Students who complete a live concert review on a concert that was not attended during the term of the course will receive an automatic 20% deduction. If you choose to do the Film Concert Review, you must choose a filmed live concert that is at least 20 minutes long and is as close to watching a live concert as possible. The concert should not be a “concert film”[1]. Avoid any associated interviews or commentary on the concert that may alter your opinions or analysis. Try to find concerts that have been professionally filmed so you are able to see each person on stage and the audience. Free live concert recordings can often be found: by searching online for a particular artist; for free on cable, including some local on demand packages; for free on these websites (among others): youtube.com pbs.org (particularly via Austin City Limits full episodes) vevo.com or for a pay to view or subscription fee on iTunes, Tidal, etc. Word Count: Each review must be between 800 and 1000 words. Should you go beyond 1000 words, a 5% deduction for the first 250 words over will be applied, and a 10% deduction for every 250 words beyond that. References will not be included in the word count. Please note that a cover page is not necessary for this assignment. Required Content: You may choose to complete this assignment in ‘newspaper review’ style, or using headings based on the required content. The information provided below is a starting point but not an exhaustive list. While this is not strictly a research assignment, you will need to do some research in order to appropriately discuss the required content. The Performer(s): Who were the performers? Describe the instrumentation and vocals. Are the performers well-known? Are they local? Set the context for the concert. (10 points) Sound: Use terminology learned from the course to describe the musical elements, style, etc. used by the performer(s). You may find it helpful to describe one song in particular in addition to providing a broad perspective of the group or artists sound. (25 points) Genre and Influences: Describe the genre of the music or what category you feel it best fits into, and what influences you feel are present. If the course materials do not provide enough background, more research will be necessary, but be sure to cite your sources in Chicago Style for Music[2]. (25 points) Venue and audience: Describe the venue and whether or not it suited the performance – if you were there, could you hear well? See well? If you watched a filmed concert, how did that affect your experience of the concert? Describe the audience – was it a mix of people or more homogenous? In general, what was the audience response? (5 points) Analysis: Given your increasing knowledge of popular music history, what are your own opinions of the show? Would you see the same performer(s) again? How do you feel this group compares to similar artists? What criticisms do you have of the artist/group or show in general? (20 points) Organization, grammar and spelling, and references: Please use formal language as you would for any academic paper. Using Chicago style, include any references you used to complete your assignment. (10 points). Proof of Attendance: If you attend a live concert, please include a ‘selfie’ or group photo taken at the concert, as well as information on the date, time, and venue of the show. Please include your picture in your assignment file. If you watched a filmed concert, please provide details on when you watched it, where, and with whom. (5 points) Materials: Your concert must be in a genre of popular music as defined in the introduction to your textbook. Please note that, as this is a popular music class, classical, modern classical, traditional, orchestral, or choral music are not relevant here. For Summer Session only, you may cover post-bebop jazz (during the Jazz Festival). If you are not sure if your chosen concert fits these guidelines, please contact your instructors. Important Information: First person perspective should be used (“I watched X concert”), but the language should remain formal. Avoid contractions and overly casual language. It is a good idea to open your review by setting the scene, ie. “I watched the Belle Plain concert on October 22 with my wife.” As with any academic or professional piece of writing, after you have introduced the artist(s), please refer to them by their last name, not their first name, i.e. Miley Cyrus should be discussed as “Cyrus” not “Miley”. Your review should aim for critical thinking and analysis; it should not read as a love letter from a fan. Even if you are a huge fan of the artist or group, try to consider other perspectives. The body should be broken into sections addressing the requirements of the assignment. If you have seen this artist in concert before, note that while comparisons are welcomed, the general focus must remain on the current concert. Your review should end with a brief summary of your overall impression of the concert. You must use proper citations (Chicago style) to reference your sources, and you should have a bibliography of all sources at the end of your paper.
