The role of poetry

The definition of poetry refers to the art form whereby there is the utilization of human language for its aesthetic qualities besides its sematic content. Poetry may use devices such as repetition and assonance for the achievement of a musical or incantatory effect. It may also use the compacted or shortened form to express ideas or feelings to the listeners or reader’s ears. Poetry is marked by the interactive layering of various effects that also include the reliance on imagery, musical qualities of the language used, and word association. The definition already establishes the fact that poetry matters in a wide scope of environments. The opening stanzas of the poem, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I am sorry I could not travel both” makes the reader understand the manifestation of meeting with the unknown (Frost).

This automatically triggers the mind to think. The first thoughts that one would get in such an instance is what was going on when with the poet’s life when he wrote the piece. As the poem progresses, things become more vivid and the reader is able to analyze what the poet meant and the message being sent. Human interaction is one of the most important aspects of a man. The society is significantly highlighted in poetry. This is seen in poetry’s ability to convey the awareness of experience (Kemp). Robert Frost poem demonstrates this following his own experiences in a manner in which they relate to society. The messages in poems can be directed in a way that will allow people to direct their opinion.

This suggests that poetry is a vehicle for messages since it bridges the gaps in understanding between people. The emotional connection between the poet and the poem are so intense thus suggesting that poetry contains more depth as compared to any form of literature (Valdez). The Road Not Taken says a lot of things in a few lines. The poet has put the lines in a brilliant way that conveys a message, creates emotions, and relates to the reader following the presented experiences. One cannot judge Robert Frost for presenting the regrets or doubts in his life as stated in the poem. It is because poetry is a direct link of the heart and the poet is allowed to pour emotions without anyone judging them.
