Article Review

In this assignment, you are asked to write a paper outlining the steps for adopting a change initiative based on the case study listed below. The content for this paper will be rooted in the article by John Kotter titled “Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail” (also listed below). Case Study: You have been recently hired as the Director of Activities at a local Adult Day Center. Although part of the Center’s purpose is to offer basic health services to its participants, the most important aspect of its function is to offer socialization, a state of well-being, and growth. The typical patron of the Center is someone over the age of 70 who has developed either a mental or physical illness and is unable to care for him- or herself at home during the day. As the Director of Activities, your job is to manage the day-to-day activities and programs as well as oversee five staff members who provide the hands on care. Following your onboarding process you quickly recognize that your Department is in desperate need of change. Your conclusion is based on your observations that most residents of the Center act bored, restless, and disengaged. There have been three incidents of “acting out” behaviors in the past month alone, requiring sedation through the use of medication. Your review of the Events Calendar for the week reveals a limited choice of programs – bingo, trivia, and reading the news and events in the newspaper. One patron of the Center tells you that “I feel like no one here really cares about what I want or what I can do. They are just going through the motions. They act as though this is a Child Care Center. I used to be a college professor but they treat me like I am a toddler. Sure, my memory is not so good but I am not stupid! Not to mention, I lived for 82 years never being interested in bingo, why should I love it now?” Further conversations with patrons yield similar sentiments. It is clear that you need to redesign the programs offered in the Center to include a larger variety of activities, more meaningful interactions, as well as a greater emphasis on personal choice and individualization. During your first meeting with the staff, you share your observations and ask for others’ input. The overwhelming response from the staff is that, while changing things is a great idea in theory, it wouldn’t work at this Center. There is too much to do in a given day; offering an even greater variety of activities would be totally overwhelming. Additionally, all other centers in the area follow the same type of Events Calendar and none of them have had any issues. In response to your exasperation, one staff member exclaims, “We care about these patrons here and we know what’s best for them. Besides, why fix something that isn’t broken?!?” The Article: Read the article by John Kotter titled: Leading Change, Why Transformation Efforts Fail” posted on Blackboard. Using the 8 steps of leading change outlined in the article, describe how you would implement a new Events Calendar in the Adult Day Center. Focus your discussion on the following points: • Write a three to five sentence vision statement that captures the essence of the change you want to implement in the Center. What would you like to see different in the way programs and activities are provided in the Center? Why do you feel compelled to implement this change? What would be the benefit for the patrons and the staff? • Provide a rationale for your change initiative using the aging theories (i.e., Modernization, Disengagement, Continuity, or Activity theory) or concepts (i.e., the meaning of old age; intellectual functioning and old age) discussed in your textbook. How would the proposed change enhance the experience of growing old? • Use Kotter’s 8 steps of leading change to outline the implementation of your initiative. This is important – simply going through the list of steps will not be sufficient – you must use these steps in the context of the change initiative you have embraced. Describe the challenges you may face along the way and how you would anticipate and address them • Describe how you would evaluate the success of your change initiative. How would you know that your efforts have been effective? • Follow the writing guidelines articulated in the syllabus (see “Guidelines for Preparing Written Assignments”). Be sure to write this assignment in your own words, rather than “regurgitate” the steps described in the John Kotter article. For the purposes of grading, a well written assignment shows the writer’s solid grasp of the content through depth of analysis, rather than simple paraphrasing. Limit your assignment length to 750-800 words. Follow APA style for writing and formatting your assignment, citations, and references
