Reaction Paper to the Poem “A Facebook Sonnet” Name Institution A Facebook Sonnet. A Facebook Sonnet is a poem that explains perfectly and bluntly the use of Facebook in fourteen lines. The tone that the author Sherman Alexie uses throughout the poem is sarcastic and at the same time real as he highlights the best and the worst part of using social media to network with friends. In the first stanza he labels Facebook as “the endless high-school reunion ” which shows that everyone is initially excited about the use of Facebook just like a high school reunion. In the second stanza he uses the quote “undervalue and unmend the present” which shows how people’s minds can be stuck in the past while at the same time living in the future. This shows that online world can occupy so much of a person’s world which is different to the end of the poem the tone of the author changes dramatically. This is a common feature in many sonnets. Although throughout the poem the poet talks about how Facebook is used for social purposes the last line “Here the altar of loneliness” (Alexie 2017) shows that the purpose of the poem was not to praise Facebook but to criticize it. The poem also shows that Facebook makes people want to reconnect with their friends as they in touch with what they are posting. This shows that there is an element of loneliness from social media due to the fact that people always and creep and stalk others just to compare themselves with people they actually do not know.References Alexie S.
