Tablets vs Textbooks in Schools

Tablets are multitasking and perform various functions like entertainment through games, video taking, photography, and music among others. It is argued that the introduction of these devices in school will be of great benefit to students. This paper will delve into the pros and cons of using tablets while juxtaposing the benefits and associated costs of the devices so as to make an argument of whether the tablet devices should or should not replace textbook materials. The paper will argue for the replacement of textbooks with tablets. This is because the benefits associated with their use outweigh their disadvantages. Additionally, a tablet has the capacity to hold hundreds of textbooks, quizzes, homework, and other files (Walling 98). This means that therefore, the use of these devices preclude the need of having a large storage space as learning materials can be fed into tablets and accessed anytime and anywhere from the tablets.

On average, a tablet contains a space of between 8 GB to 64 GB. Thirdly, with the use of tablets, it is possible to use e-textbooks which are by far cheaper than the print textbooks. According to reports of the Federal Communication Commission, K-12 school districts spend not less than $8 billion annually on textbooks. Finally, tablets prepare students for a world that is deeply immersed in technology. They enable students to learn technological skills in their early life. According to Shamir at al. (971), it is indispensable taking into account that the highest and the fastest growing “jobs in the United States are technology intensive” and that employment in the “computer and information systems is expected to grow by 18% by 2020. ” This is was revealed by statistics of the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Further, there lacks sufficient home internet for students to use their tablets and this may therefore not be good in such cases. Finally, tablets are expensive devices and as such, they are target of theft than they are the textbooks (Walling 101). In conclusion, despite the traditional textbooks having some advantages and also the cons associated with the use of tablets in school, the benefits of using tablets outweigh the cons of using them. Juxtaposing the pros and cons leads to a conclusion that tablets should replace textbooks in schools. This will lead to increased efficiency in terms of saving time as students have the notes and e-textbooks wherever they are and they can access them anytime.
