Paper Topic Guidelines: This paper will be 5 pages typed, double-spaced with 12 pt., Times New Roman font and 1‑inch margins on all sides. The paper must be documented in MLA style. The bibliography should include at least three print sources, and may contain Internet sources as well. It will be due on Monday, April 25th. The student may select from a topics’ list which will be emailed in Week 1 of the semester (which isn’t inclusive) or make up their own topic, but the topic chosen must be submitted to the professor for approval by Monday February 22nd.
The term paper shall include a critique of one of the JSTOR journal articles that you have cited in your paper. JSTOR is available in the Middlesex County College Library website.
In this critique, you’ll discuss the author’s motivation for writing the article, you’ll discuss the article’s strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll compare the article to relevant sections of your textbooks.
The purpose of the paper is to give students an opportunity to investigate a particular topic that they are interested in and to pursue this topic in greater depth than can be covered in class or in the textbook. It should therefore be more than a repeat or survey of the textbook material. The topic chosen should not be too broad nor too narrow and must pertain to Western Civilization during the time period covered in this course (1715-Present). Ideally, some theme or idea should tie the factual data together in the paper and show its relevance to Western Society (e.g., how did the French Revolution impact other nations).
The paper is to reflect the student’s own work. Plagiarism and copying from books, websites and other sources is unacceptable and will result in a failed paper. For proper formatting, citations and Works Cited page, students must follow the MLA style. The paper must include a “Works Cited” page with at least three sources cited which may include books, journal articles and/or websites (our textbook does not count as one of the three). No cover page is needed. No hard copy is needed because you will submit it via Campus Cruiser. The paper will be graded on the basis of the following four criteria: (a) following proper formatting and instructions, (b) quality of sources, (c) quality of writing (e.g. grammar/punctuation), and (d) quality of content, the last item being the most important.
