Senior Manager Interview and Report Conduct your interview after April 9, 2016, which leaves several days to write your report. Directions: You are to have an “in person” interview with a senior-level manager in an organization with more than 50 employees. A senior manager in a private sector business is preferable. The Senior Manager should have ten (10) years or more of management experience and should be a senior vice president or higher in organization. Interviews should occur within two weeks before end of term. Restrictions: Do not select someone in your present employment, a past employer or supervisor, relative (including in-laws), or friend’s relative. One purpose of this assignment is to expand your network, outside of your comfort zone and to learn from a seasoned manager whom you do not know. Interview/Report Content: For the senior manager interview, you should discuss with the manager the various topics outlined below. For the report, you are to consider yourself as a member of a consulting firm that has been hired to review and make recommendations to the company’s senior management. You should include the following information on the following topics derived from your interview: -Manager’s background: Name, title/position, name of organization, number of people manager manages, two-three key responsibilities. Managers education and prior work experience–be brief. -Management functions: Of the four primary management functions (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling/evaluating), how much time does manager spend in each function? State types of activities performed in each function. -Performance Management: What type of performance review is used in the organization? How are they conducted? How often? What is manager’s opinion of its usefulness? As a consultant, do you feel there are improvements that can be made to the appraisal process? Attach as an appendix to the report a copy of the company’s Performance Appraisal. If they do not have one, get one from another source and critique. -Organizational Design and Structure: Indicate the top level of management by position and titles and indicate the positions reporting to the manager being interviewed. Analyze strengths and weaknesses of the organizational structure and the organizational Chart. Attach as an appendix a copy of the company’s organizational chart. If they do not have one, draw an org. chart based on the information you obtained in the interview. It should be typed and look professional. -Mission Statement: Obtain a copy of the company mission statement. Who was involved in its creation? How long was the process? What are the strengths and weaknesses? Where is it displayed within the company? How often is it reviewed and revised? Attach as an appendix to the report a copy of the company’s mission statement. If they do not have one, get one from another source and critique. -Leadership Effectiveness: What style of leadership does the manager use? Do you think his/her style is effective in this setting? If possible, give examples. -Employee Motivation: What motivational technique(s) does this manager say he/she uses? Do you think it is effective? In general, does the company use other motivational techniques? -Organizational Culture: Describe the Organization's culture. What kind of atmosphere prevails in the company? What impact does the physical setting have? Is there a “Dress code?” How does the company promote its attitudes and values in employees? How does the company deal with change? -Management of Organizational Change and Stress: Describe how the Organization manages diversity, stress and change issues. What types of models, structures, procedures do they incorporate into the Organization to deal with these types of issues. Written Report Requirements: Format: Cover page, table of contents, Times New Roman, 12 point font, typed, single spaced, one inch margins, maximum of 4-5 pages, excluding appendices. Appendices should include organizational chart, performance appraisal form, and mission statement. You should use the Five Paragraph Essay format in writing your report. Be sure to proofread your paper to remove any spelling errors, grammatical errors, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments. Remember, this is not a “Question-and-here-is-his/her-answer-Report.” Include a follow-up “Thank You Note” to person interviewed by you, thanking him/her for the time spent and the help you received. It must be included as an attachment to the report in order to get full credit. ** Please note this is not the letter you sent confirming your interview appointment. It is a letter sent after the interview thanking the person for taking the time with you. Grading Criteria: (1) Content—questions and concepts covered in sufficient depth to show an understanding, comparison and application of the concepts taught this semester to the information obtained from the interview. (2) Integration—For each topic, you will be graded by how you identify, integrate, compare and contrast the course resources, including the lectures, text, assigned articles, videos, guest speakers, etc. Points will be deducted if the course references are not integrated and identified according to standard attribution protocols (footnotes, inline references, etc). For example: when you are discussing the mission statement, state the principle and note the reference (page number) from the text a prior to the period, such as (Rue, p. 161). (3) Writing—you will be graded on clarity, conciseness, mechanics, grammar, spelling, proofreading. Your audience is your consulting company that has asked you to interview their client’s senior management to get the client company’s information regarding the topics outlined above. Submit report online by Monday April 25, 2016.
