Article analysis and summary

Assignment Information: In this assignment you are invited to consolidate on your earlier work by making more ‘critical’ or ‘skeptical’ observations about the work you read. Assignment 3 will involve preparing journal entries (approximately 500 words per reading) for weeks 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 reading and critically engaging with at least one article relating to the lecture topics. We encourage people to start extending their reading beyond the recommended list. Journal entries should summarize the main issues/points in the articles and critically assess their significance in relation to the content of the unit. You are also encouraged to note any questions that are prompted from the readings. I encourage you to do five things each week: 1. Choose your reading carefully and discerningly. 2. Note at the top of the page the full reference details of the article. 3. Describe using full sentences and paragraphs the key points that are in the reading. 4. Make some critical observations about the work (comparing and contrasting ideas with the work of others, noting limits in arguments, establishing key assumptions made). 5. List two or three questions that emerge for you as a consequence of reading the article. Each topic should be 500 minimum and 650 maximum words and each topic should have seperate summary and analysises. For example: 5a and 5b should be put together and make 500 words, 6a and 6b should be together making 500 words, 8a and 8b another 500 words and Topic 4 and 7 have one article each which should be 500 each. It means these all 5 topics should be written 500 words each and make 2,500 words in total. Below is the Lecture topics for the Weeks mentioned in Assignment information above: TOPIC 4 Nidja Noongar noonook nyininy: a case study in community driven education This week we turn to our first example of community development. This project involved the Catholic Education Office working with over 100 members of the Noongar community to help produce an educational package designed to increase the numeracy and literacy of primary school children. What made this project more important was the extent to which Noongar and their language, culture and conceptual devices were drawn upon to lead and design the work. Article 4. TOPIC 5 Community Development, Martin Buber and Dialogue This week we examine Martin Buber’s very practical work on dialogue. His work has begun to influence a number of Australian practitioners (particularly in Queensland). He shows how to shift from an obsession with what he calls ‘I-It’ practice towards a more conversational ‘I-Thou’ relationship. Article 5a and 5b. TOPIC 6 The Critique of Bourgeois Case Work: Neo-Marxian and Feminist Thought in Community Development This lecture introduces students to some of the critical traditions that shaped community development, particularly during the 1970s and 80s. This includes the work of those variously describing themselves as radical social workers, Marxists and Feminists. Article 6a and 6b TOPIC 7 The Lost Generation Project: a case study in respecting the contributions of community members The Lost Generation Project was conceived in 2002 in response to concerns about the exclusion experienced by people with disabilities living in supported accommodation. In partnership with the Western Australian Disability Services Commission, local governments and other local community groups, the arts and disability organisation DADAA, set about helping find arts and cultural solutions to the problem of social isolation. Article 7 TOPIC 8 Liberating work: Freire and Community Development One of the most influential thinkers in community development has been the Brazilian philosopher and activist Paulo Freire. This week we examine his interest in the importance of the language and conceptual ideas of communities, the practice of dialogue and liberating the way we go about educating. Article 8a and 8b
