Human Understanding: The Reality of The Table Name Institution WHAT IS THE REALITY OF THE TABLE? This paper is going to look at the relationship between what we truly perceive and what really exist. By examining a table we can be able to tell if it exists or not by looking at its shape color and texture. This quality alone is sufficient enough to raise doubt on whether the table really exist. This is because the perception from this observation are not fixed on the reality but the conditions in which the observations were made. Basing on this alone a distinction between assumption and reality can be made. The main question guiding us is what the reality of the table? If we critically analyze a table we ca easily identify its features to the naked eye as brown shiny smooth to the touch cool and hard and when tapped at sense experience.”. Locke goes further and puts an example of a child who has been raised in a deprived circumstances never testing oysters such a child will have no idea of how they test like . According to Locke our prevailing current view is a product of innate elements and empirical evidence . From the information above we can conclude that our perception and past experiences largely determines how we view our realities. It’s clear that the reality of the table if there is one is not immediately known to us at all but an inference from what is immediately known. From Locke’s empiricist theory we have seen that past experiences and perception are key elements in determining what we really see and perceive. References Locke J. (1690).
