Blumer defines symbolic interaction theory as a process of interaction which involves the formation of connotations in individuals. The theory basically denotes that people are inspired to act based on their perception towards themselves and other people. These perceptions are also transferred towards dialogue in which people communicate towards themselves and others. Symbolic interaction theory is based on the self-concept that different people entail (Blumer, 2012). The objective of this paper is to discuss on the self-concept of a well-known person while relating it to Blumer’s symbolic interaction theory. In relation to symbolic interaction theory, people will always react to others based on how they perceive themselves. It is common for people with similar talents, skills, and abilities to interact with each other.

This is because their self-meaning is regulating more on their achievements and success. Self-concept is also affected by the self-esteem which entails an evaluation of a person’s worth. Self-concept and self-esteem influences communication in a great way. That means that for us to know who we are, we need to learn from our surrounding, more so the people around us. It is through interactions that we get to identify our potentials, our strongholds and weak points. West & Turner (2018), also relate self-concept with beliefs, feelings, attitudes, interests and personal values. These are elements that help a person to judge him or herself. For example, if a student has a positive attitude towards mathematics, the student will be able to perform well in mathematics related courses such as physical sciences.

Chris has recorded about seven hip-hop songs of which he is not decided whether to release to the album to the media. He is worried that his mother and other church members will judge him and perhaps discriminate him from church membership. He is also stack to seek advice from his cleric as the last time he approached him, the guy told him that he should purposely serve God and that singing secular will defile his faith. Chris’ self-concept is interesting. The last time I asked him about his way forward on the album, Chris said that he is a Christian and releasing the album will be a betrayal of his faith. I don’t blame Chris and his belief because we all have different destinies.
