Key Principles for ELL Instructions
Principle one states that educators should develop discipline specific competence. Opportunities for learning should integrate reading and writing as well as speaking and listening (Lucas, Villegas, & Freedson-Gonzalez, 2008). The second principle instructs that a teacher should use the ELL’s native language and culture as leverage. The third principle stipulates that instructions given should be standard aligned and appropriate with the grade level of the student. The fourth principle is about addressing the needs of students based on their prior school or learning experience. I also communicate with the parents openly and it helps me get a better understanding of my students’ social life and histories to help me better understand the ELLs needs. This comes in handy because I am able to understand the social and emotional background of the student and integrate it with academic life.
