This week’s article review is a rhetorical précis. First, choose one of the articles assigned for this week: "Reading the Author's Logic" (CC 18-29) or "The Law of Accelerating Returns" (CC 490-495). Then, write a rhetorical précis for the article. Please study and follow the instructions below. To do well on this assignment your précis must be well written, and it must adhere to the guidelines listed below.
A specific kind of summary is the rhetorical précis. The emphasis in the rhetorical précis is on the rhetorical aspect of the work, written or spoken, that you are considering. Rhetorical study is the study of language use and communication. Thus, a rhetorical précis is designed to show the main points of the work, such as the name of the writer, the name and genre (or type) of work, the manner of information delivery, the main and supporting points, and the relation between the writer and audience. The rhetorical précis consists of four sentences:
Sentence 1: The first sentence names the author, the genre (essay, novel, speech, etc.), the title (with the date of the work in parentheses) followed by a verb ( “claims,” “posits,” “argues,” etc.), followed by “that” and a phrase or clause in which you state the thesis of the work.
Sentence 2: The second sentence explains the manner in which the author supports the thesis. You do not do this by restating details but by explaining the rhetorical method which the author used to develop the support, such as narration, comparison, classification, etc.
Sentence 3: The third sentence states the purpose of the work. This may reflect the thesis but must include why the author has created the work. The third sentence contains a phrase or clause beginning “in order to,” such as “The writer delineates his version of the future in order to . . . .”
Sentence 4: The fourth sentence states the intended audience for the work and how the author positions him or herself in relation to that audience.
Your precis should be double spaced, and between the end of the heading and the beginning of the text of the precis, you must include a work cited entry for the article. See the example in the Unit 12 dropbox.
