Opioid Epidemic In America

This drug could be Percodan, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and heroin which are either synthetic or partially synthetic. The commonly prescribed opioids are oxycodone, morphine, and codeine. However, it should be noted that opioids are highly addictive drugs if not taken as prescribed and this could result in addiction and even death. Some of these opioids such as heroin are considered illegal; administration of opioids could be done through injection in the veins, orally, inhalation through the nose, or even through smoking. The use of opioid has been considered an epidemic in the United States of America. To this extent, opioids could bring about cravings, and the patient could fall deep into addiction. Addiction refers to a brain disorder; a biological process that enhances the satisfaction of a certain stimulus, that increases use of a certain substance, regardless of its negative effects.

This brings about the desire for this substance, and the user will go to any extents to get their hands on it. Addiction to opioids could be due to using the drugs in a way not prescribed by the doctor. The most reasonable cause of addiction is the fact that it alters the brain and reduces pain. These drugs, taken correctly, help the addicts to reduce the dosages and shun from using the drug. In medical terms, the use of these drugs is called ‘Replacement Therapy,’ and is a commonly used method of treatment. During treatment, the addicts might be sent to treatment facilities such as support groups, vocational rehabilitation centers, and therapeutically oriented sessions. However, addicts can be made to submit to exercises, hypnosis, and acupuncture or even use of herbs.
