Assignment #7: Primary Research (The ethics of animal testing)

Instructional Objectives In this assignment students will: refine strategies for understanding and evaluating sources by locating primary research either with conducting field research or an online database primary article on approved research topic, refine strategies for searching online database systems and conducting their own primary research by locating a reasonable primary source in the GCC database or conducting field reserach using Polldaddy, and practice note taking skills by writing paraphrases, summaries and quoting sources from the located primary source. Primary Research Project This assignment is designed to teach you how to get primary research for your final paper. At least one source used in your final paper must be primary. Read your textbook for an explanation of primary sources. A primary source is a record created as part of, or during an event, crisis, or time period. For instance a letter, diary, governmental report, newspaper, or speech produced during the American Civil War would be a primary source. While a memoir of the war written after the fact could also be considered a primary source it would not be as valid as those produced at the time the event took place (memory can blur or embellish events). A book written about the Civil War by an historian would be considered a secondary source. A secondary source is the compilation or interpretation of events by an individual; often one who has used primary sources to produce the work. You have two options when dealing with primary research. You may conduct your own primary research or you may locate your primary sources using a database. You may share your primary research surveys with the class in the class discussion: Discussion #3. The following are the detailed steps for each option. Remember, you will choose only ONE option below. Option 1: Conduct your own primary research The two most common types of primary research for researchers to do are interviews and surveys. By interviewing or surveying people, you will be gathering important information related to your topic first hand. This would then be considered a primary source. Be sure to read your textbook about conducting an interview and survey. Step 1: Write a detailed description of the person or persons you plan to interview. For a survey, describe the audience you plan to survey. Who are they, where will you find them? Be specific. This description should be one to two paragraphs. Step 2: Write the questions for your research. For a survey, the questions should be short and easy to answer. Three to 5 questions should be used. If you have 5 questions, the questions should not required a lengthy response by your pollers. For an interview, you will need more in depth questions, usually at least 10 questions that require more detailed responses. Write out your questions under the description of the person or persons to be interviewed or surveyed. Make sure it is clear whether you are conducting an interview or a survey. Step 3: Conduct your survey or interview. For a survey you need a minimum of 30 responses. Write a detailed description of the process you followed and the results of your interaction. Just tell me what happened when you did your survey or your interview. If you used an online survey site, record the online location along with your description. Don’t focus on the result or the responses you received. That is the next step. Write at least a paragraph. Step 4: Write up a summary of your survey results and a description of how you may use this in your final paper. Don’t just list numbers. Write out the information in paragraph form. For an interview, you may write the answers to the interview questions in this step along with an explanation of how the information may be used in your paper. But this will be just as good for your final paper. Step 1: Using the library, begin your search in the same way you began your search for periodicals. Click on the Databases & Reference link on the library main page. Choose the Academic Search Premier database for this assignment. Remember you must be on campus to search this database or you must log in using your eGCC account. Once you get to the search page, click the tab at the top to do an Advanced Search. On this page you will have the option to choose the Publication Type. Look on the right column. Choose Primary Source Document from the menu (See Photo Below). Then at the top of the search page, type in your search descriptor words and hit search. The sources that come up will be primary sources. Step 2: Choose two primary research sources from your search in EBSCO. Read or skim through the articles. Write a short 1 paragraph description for each article telling why they are considered primary research. What is it that makes it primary research? Step 3: Write a brief summary for the article, at least one paragraph, for each article. Step 4: Using the same sources, find two interesting and useful quotes in the source. Copy the original quote to your paper, use quotation marks, and label it Original, and then write your paraphrase under it. Label it as a Paraphrase. Step 5: Write a brief description of how you may use the two primary sources in your final paper. Will it make a difference that these are primary sources? One paragraph (4-5 sentences) for each source is plenty. That’s it. Remember you will only do one of the two options above, not both.
