For this assignment, I want you to listen to a specified piece of music while giving free reign to where it takes you in your imagination and in your feelings. Listen once just to get an overall impression of the piece. Then listen again, taking notes of your feelings, impressions, and imaginings. You will use these notes to help you write your essay. Make sure that your reactions are directly and sincerely connected to the moods and suggestions of the music – not just random. To do this, you must listen very carefully for the expressive implications that might have been intended by the composer.
Write your paper in essay format giving a chronological account (from the beginning of the piece to end) of your reactions, using the timing counter on the player to indicate particular moments that you are referencing. Try to explain what it is about the sound of the music that is producing your reactions at those moments - in other words, the musical reasons for your responses (here you should use some of the relevant terminology and concepts you have learned in the course so far to explain your thinking).
NOTE: This is not a research assignment! All written work should be completely original! No information should be copied or paraphrased from any other sources, whether it concerns the history, content, or musical elements that inform the musical pieces. Unoriginal work will compromise the grade for the assignment.
Minimum word length: 1080 words.
Assignment 3 - The Live Concert Report Assignment -- due by 7/27/17 -- 10% of course grade
For this assignment you must attend a live, professional* concert of Classical Music and write an analytical review about it (at least the equivalent of 3-5 typed, double-spaced, full pages, not including headings -- that amounts to a minimum word count of 1,080 words.). The concert you choose must be either:
1) a symphony orchestra concert, ideally with a professional* orchestra
2) a chamber music concert, ideally with professional* musicians
3) a professional* opera company performance with a live orchestra, or
4) a professional* ballet performance. The ballet must include a live orchestra in the orchestra pit, and the music must not be Rock or Pop (since the focus of this class is primarily on other genres of music).
*("Professional" means that all of the musicians are currently making their primary living performing music.)
You do not necessarily have to spend a lot of money for concert tickets. Concert prices can range from free to full-fee, so if you want to keep costs down, it is important to plan your concert early enough in the semester so that you are not left with only full-fee alternatives at the end.
