Through the slow journey, Wagamese offers a backdrop of Eldon’s confession, sins, and dark past. Eldon’s journey acts as a transformation pilgrim that gradually awakens his failures and life’s mishaps before he finally succumbs to death (Wagamese 12). During the “confession” Franklin takes the role of a skeptical reluctant witness in Eldon’s final phase of consciousness. All through the treacherous journey, Franklin is faced with his bitterness towards his father’s betrayal, the old farmer who raised him, and his mother. The Confessions and Healing The confessions all through the journey act as medicine to father and son in a unique way. Gradually along the journey, his spirit brightens moving away from the darkness that had once covered his alcohol wretched ways.

On the other hand, the journey despite not giving him the feeling of forgiveness towards his father, it provides him with the opportunity to accept his father’s condition. He is relieved of the heavy burden of holding a grudge against his father and mother. The journey is no doubt healing his ravaged state of parent-less life. The unfolding spiritual highlights from his father offers an eye-opener to many aspects of his parent’s life he knew nothing about. As a way of confession, he admits to his failures in life and the best way to do so is lament with his son. He understands that doing so will not rectify his past mistakes, but will help the two live with the truth of the matter and accept the reality with no hard feelings against each other.
