Beneatha, Walter’s younger sister also appears in the play. By standards of the day, the family lives in very poor conditions. However, they live in hope as Lena waits to receive a cheque of $10,000 as insurance after the death of her late husband (Hansberry, 10). Walter and his mother, being the two main characters in the family want this money to benefit the family, but they have different ideas to implement this. The play revolves around the dreams of Walter, as he struggles to try and proof himself as a man who can provide happiness to his family, versus the ideas of his mother and his wife, who are more conservative and lack in ambition as compared to Walter. Ideally, good plays are plays whose characters are easy and interesting to define and describe.

This aspect is met by almost each and every character in the play. Lena, for instance, presents the desired character of a strong and disciplined woman throughout the play. She is also very conservative, characteristic of the black woman of the day. Her son Walter is ambitious and focused. Conclusively, a raisin in the sun is a good play, having won numerous awards and winning the hearts of people in theatre halls. The themes and ideologies presented in the play are si distinct and engaging. Additionally, it is creatively written in such a way that even today’s generations can understand out rightly the social and family life of the day, just by watching the play. It will be a theatre hall’s favorite for many decades.
