Fill out the questions about "The Yellow Wall Paper"

Guiding Questions for Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” In responding to the following passages, refer to specific passages that suggest your particular interpretation. In other words, constantly ground your interpretations in the text. Also, don’t just answer the questions. EXPLAIN WHY you chose such a response. 1a) “The Yellow Wallpaper” has an inside and an outside pattern. What does each pattern represent? 1b) Is the protagonist part of the inside or the outside pattern, or both? Why? 2. Naming/characterization: a) Why does Gilman create a NAMELESS narrator? What could be the significance of such a choice on her part? b) Who is Jane at the end of the story? Is she Jennie, some other woman, a type-o? Why do you choose your particular interpretation? 3. Arguably, the yellow wallpaper can be described as having a pervasive quality: it has an odor; it rubs off on people; and it is personified. Explain the reason why Gilman would describe the paper in these ways and give it this pervasive quality. 4. Most readers of “The Yellow Wallpaper” agree that the nameless narrator is mad by the end of the story. However, some see her as triumphing, to an extent at least, against the male-dominated society (patriarchy) that oppresses her while others claim she ultimately loses in her battle against this oppression. What do you think and why?
