Name Instructor’s name Course Date Language Policy In Relation to Shop Signs Introduction The term ‘Language Policy’ describes a set of laws regulations decisions and procedures that are put in place by the people in authority with the intention of influencing the status of a particular language as well the linguistic behavior of the individuals who use that language (Spolsky p34). Such policies can be presented in different forms including laws directives official documents or the constitution. In some countries the constitution empowers certain people to influence the role and status of certain competing languages. Language use in shop signs is a prevalent practice. Shop owners choose to use a certain language or languages on their shop signs for specific pragmatic reasons. In Israel there are two competing languages: Hebrew and that most of the shop signs in the selected sample give preference to the Arabic language. In most cases the shop owner translates the information into either English or Hebrew to make it understandable for the non-native speakers of Arabic. In fewer shop signs Hebrew is given preference with the intention of reaching out to the Hebrew community. In a significant number of shop signs the English language is favored with the primary purpose of reaching out to foreigners. Therefore Arabic is observed to be the dominant and principal language in Nazareth. Works Cited Muchnik Malka Marina Niznik Anbessa Teferra and Tania Gluzman.
