The disease is caused by inheriting a copy of sickle cell gene from both parents. The gene deforms the oxygen carrying hemoglobin making the red blood cells to obtain a sickle shape. As such the red blood cells are stuck to the blood vessels making it difficult for the blood to flow to other body organs. This in turn results in pain low blood count and organ damage. Therefore the disease is accompanied by pain crisis and a wide range of opportunistic illnesses including anemia stroke among others.
