Also, age, race, family history, and pre-diabetes are factors that contribute to individual developing type 2 diabetes. Men have been found to be at a greater risk of been diagnosed with diabetes as compared to women. This is because for men to develop the condition, they have to experience weight while women need to gain more weight (Fennell, 2011). Fat distribution in men is different than in a woman which explains their tendency to develop diabetes. Type 2 diabetes in the early stages is managed with healthy eating and regular physical exercise. However, as the disease continues to progress, a person with type 2 diabetes is required to take tablets and will eventually require insulin. The disease is known to progress naturally and making sure that tablets and insulin are taken as required will ensure fewer long-term complications.

If you have a family member with diabetes, you are genetically disposed to the condition. Other than genetic disposition, there are other life choices and factors that increase risk of developing type 2 diabetes, such as high blood pressure, insufficient physical activities, overweight, unhealthy diet, and accumulation of extra weight around the abdomen (Hill, Nielsen, & Fox, 2013, pp. Research in prediabetic and diabetic patients has shown that physical activity helps in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Lifestyles changes such as managing your blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, and quit smoking if you smoke are important in managing diabetes. For people who have developed the disease, it is important for them to follow a healthy meal plan, limit their calorie intake, become physically active, and taking prescribed medicines.
