In addition, the author says that the environmental degradation costs the county roughly 3. 5% of the national gross domestic product (GDP). This source argues for the increasing smog in Beijing by providing relevant data. On top of that, Jonathan Watts in NGOs upbeat over China's environmental transparency progress says that a survey on openness and accountability showed that an increasingly informed public puts pressure on companies to improve their environmental transparency in China. Environmentalists are calling for the establishment of a registry where companies can report their pollution data to the public thus improving public scrutiny and supervision.
