Minority leaders in today's workplace
I realize the constraints of an 15 week course; however, I think it is important for you to get into the literature and begin thinking about how this course can be used for your final paper for the degree. As a result, I am requiring an 8-10 page paper at the end of this course. The format and style for this paper can vary. In the following paragraphs, I will provide some specifics on what you can do to fulfill the paper assignment for this course.
As I indicated in the document concerning the paper, I will accept a review of literature, a methods section, a research proposal, and a completed paper. I will also accept a review of related articles focusing on a specific topic of leadership communication. For example, the authors in both texts explore the concept of charisma as it relates to leadership. I would accept for the paper assignment, a review of 10 or so articles that focus on charisma. The articles would need to come for scholarly journals and explore either theoretically or empirically the concept of charisma. If you chose to do a literature review do no just turn in 10 scholarly reviews in the form we use for class. Make the paper a true literature review.
I give charisma as an example; however, you are not limited to that topic. You could explore a variety of topics: powerful and powerless speech, metaphors and leadership, public leadership, ethics and leadership, leadership development activities, civic actions and leadership, servant leadership, transformational leadership, power and leadership, coercion and leadership, participative leadership, organizational culture and leadership, change and leadership nonverbal communication and leadership, groupthink and leadership, etc.
I would also accept an exploration of a theory related to leadership. You could do a review of literature concerning a theory that specifically relates to leadership and/or communication factors that impact leadership. Examine the theoretical perspectives that are explored in the articles you submit for the scholarly reviews and see if one of the theories interests you.
I would also accept a paper that explored survey measures that have been developed to tap effective or ineffective leadership styles. You could identify a particular survey measure and explore how the measure has been used, how it could be used, the advantages of the measure, the limitations of the measure, research questions that could be tested by using the measure, etc. This type of paper would assist you in developing the methods section for your thesis or your final paper for the degree.
Finally, I would even accept a completed unit that could be used in the teaching of this course in the future. You could develop a unit which would include readings, assignments, and discussion questions on a topic of leadership that you thought should be included in the course. The unit would need to be of graduate quality and would need to logically fit within the structure of the course.
If you do a standard paper I expect the paper to use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association as style guide. Purdue University provides a nice online referee, Owl - Purdue - APA Guide. Also several handy tool exist for citing and creating your reference list. One of my favorites is ZOTERO. You can use Zotero for free or if you want to store your references in a cloud you can do so for a fee.
If you chose to do a unit of instruction you may do it as a PowerPoint presentation. However, the PowerPoint presentation must be much more than but bullet points. I expect most of the slides to be graphic in nature. I would expect you to have extensive speech notes that then relate your slides to the subject matter. I require creativity in PowerPoint presentations. I know most of you have been bored by someone doing a PowerPoint presentation who only had bullet points that they read to the audience. Don't use clip art. Try and tell a story with your presentation. Many good resources exist on line for doing presentations well some of them are:
Beyond Bullet Points
Huffington Post article about the book slide:ology
You can see many good PowerPoint presentations at Slide Share but also so bad ones
TED is a great source for many good presentations
In short, whatever you decide to be your approach to the final paper, I am wanting you to think about leadership and the scholarly research related to the topic.
