Current Issues and Problems in Civil Engineering

Document 1

Civil engineering innovations affect our daily quality of life. Water is the most significant resource on the planet. However, water is not available in all places. It is the work of civil engineers to get water from point A to B. What is required of us to enjoy good looking cities full of self-driving cars with few accidents and less traffic? There is a need for traffic engineering which is mainly done by civil engineers. These threats can only be solved by implementing waste management policies and use of hydropower. In every discipline including civil engineering, sustainability is one positive way of impacting the environment. Sustainability forms the basis of waste management, pollution control and the basis for the evolution of environmental policy in each field of study.

Civil engineering is one of those areas that can cause a massive impact on the environment. Despite the great benefits that civil engineering has vested in the world, there are several cases of pollution and waste disposal impacting the environment negatively. It ensures that several conditions on all workplaces at this planet support the project of civilization and the global communities do not slip into deteriorating the environmental conditions and the resources. There was the need for Civil Engineering human and technical activities to be addressed in regard to the dramatic environmental changes on this planet that can influence policymaking and the natural web. Careless dumping of waste, chemical use and pouring and constructions causing damages on land, use of machines, gas emission production and creating environmental refugees should be well addressed and their impact reviewed.

With the review, sustainability in the 21st century is certain that nations and the community will both mitigate the declines of the ecosystems and adapt them. One recent sustainability policy that was stressed on is that of striving to avoid the unmanageable and the unavoidable. Similarly, diesel used is responsible for hydrocarbon and carbon mono/dioxide vapors which are harmful and toxic in the air we breathe in every day. It is essential that each machine and a working device should use energy to perform its functions. However, it is recommended that the energy source should be clean and free from toxic substances. Diesel and oil used in building sites form the major cause of water and air pollution. Construction debris and dirt washed to river banks also contribute to water pollution.

The dangers it causes are quite massive, unknown and insufficiently researched in the health sector. It is then the role of the public to slow down the spread of the chemical while performing their construction or rather civil engineering physical activities. Pollutants left on construction sites also sink into the ground, and it might damage the soil as well as groundwater used by human beings and animals. Groundwater is the most trusted source of human drinking water, and once they are contaminated, it becomes challenging to treat them on the surface. The establishments of industries that involve the use of fertilizers, chemicals, refineries, iron, and steel have led to air, land and water pollution in the environment. Civil engineering also increases cases of deforestation which has also led to soil erosion and frequent loss of sustaining logging potential.

Loss of biodiversity has led to the loss of genetic resources. Atmospheric changes have led to the disruption of the marine food chain, damage in infrastructure along the coast due to sea rise and regional variations in production of agriculture. In most developed and developing countries, destructive activities such as extraction of minerals from the earth cause environmental issues hence undermining sustainability (Troschinetz et. all 2009). Old technology release gases and pollutants leading to climate change. In conclusion, the analysis of the environmental impact shows that management of waste in factories promotes sustainability in the environment since it is associated to resolving problems damaging the physical resources such as water bodies which host marine life and it also focuses on water safety used in consumption by human beings and animals.
