Contemporary Leadership Essay

The theory states that leaders are identified in the world with all sorts of characteristics that confirms them as the great leaders. As a trait like a leader, their certain core values that must be held to facilitate the success. Rick Perry, the Cabinet Secretary took a unique twist while handling the lawmakers and this portrayed his possession of key leadership traits. Prior controlling the behaviors of the lawmakers, while serving as the Governor he managed to control the public funds where he directed them to his fundamental area of investment; education and infrastructure. There is a rising controversy with the trait approach of leadership such that various studies have narrowed down to identify the specific personality traits describing a good leader but the list has not been exhausted.

The cabinet Secretary indeed possessed the trait of self-confidence such that he provided solutions to the arising issues and as a way of providing the long last solution; he decided to invest in the sectors of education and infrastructure. When the followers experienced good roads, access to water and electricity at ease and quality education provided to their children they got satisfied and got convinced to vote for him. Review of the Trait Theory of Leadership There are researchers who deeply investigated the topic of trait theory of leadership with the aim of providing a conclusive understanding of the subject. According to Zaccaro (2007), in 1948, a study by Ralph Melvin Stogdill provides a broad suggestion that great leadership is defined as the corresponding resulting interaction or association between the respective individual/ followers and the underlining social situation but not with the predetermined set of personality traits.

In 1974, a study by Stodgill introduces a new contribution to the argument that leadership is only acquired through the combination of both the personality traits and underlining situational variables. He faced them and gave them no room to do whatever they intended to do. In such a way it is also expected that a great leader exploits the trait of well understanding its followers and their corresponding needs and desires. Perry, the Cabinet Secretary paid attention to the people of Texas he genuinely cared about their good living by providing the essential things that influenced their good living. He never discriminated rather he initiated programs that benefited the entire public but not the respective individuals. The trait theory of leadership indicates why personal principles influence the effective success of a person as a leader.
