The Learning Reflection Essay is a 3-5 page (double-spaced) narrative that is a thoughtful reflection on your lifelong learning. You will probably notice learning patterns, identify a critical or peak learning experience, and be able to link these to your future goals. This is neither an autobiography nor a journal entry; rather, this activity requires you to identify the key learning experiences from your life, reflect on them, and connect them.
1. Use the first person (“I”) throughout your essay.
2. Double-space your work and use a 12-point font.
3. Use APA Style formatting.
4. Follow this outline to construct your essay to ensure that it contains all of the elements:
I. Introductory Paragraph(s) – to describe your background and experience. Briefly touch on areas such as your training, personal life, volunteer, military and work experience, etc. Focus on your adult life (learning that has happened after high school). (1/2 page)
II. General Patterns and Themes – What themes do you see spanning your learning? You may begin with more obvious themes, for example, learning that has resulted from continual promotions at work. But you must then reflect more deeply about your lifelong learning in order to arrive at a few less obvious themes or patterns in your experiences. For example, you might find a theme that reflects your core values or work ethic. Or, you might find insights about the type of work or environments in which you thrive. There is no right or wrong answer to this section, and you might be surprised to discover some things about yourself you had not previously considered! (1 -2 pages)
III. Specific Learning Reflections –Describe several concrete learning experiences that reflect key moments in your learning after high school. These experiences may be ones in which you were challenged to use your mind, your emotions, and/or your physical capabilities. The experiences can be drawn from any area of your life; however, you should avoid sharing very private details about your personal life. Try to focus on the learning experiences that may represent a subject area for which you will request a portfolio assessment. In this section, be sure to describe what you learned from these learning experiences. Also, include what you learned about yourself from these experiences. (1 -2 pages)
IV. Future Learning – Wrap-up your essay by thinking about the most important findings from this reflection activity. Then, look to the future and briefly discuss your goals in light of your past learning. (1/2 page)
