“Was Her Purse part of the Vehicle Exception?” Student’s Name: Institution: Date of Submission: “Was Her Purse part of the Vehicle Exception?” The case “Was Her Purse Part of the Vehicle Exception?” involved Wyoming v. Houghton case number 526 U.S. 295 (1999). In this case Sandra Houghton was convicted in the District Court Natrona County Wyoming for being in possession of methamphetamine and she appealed. Sandra was arrested after his friend David Young who was driving the car was stopped by a Wyoming Highway Traffic Patrol officer who noticed a needle in the driver’s shirt pocket (Samaha 2012). The officer searched the car and Houghton’s purse upon learning that the needle in the driver’s shirt pocket was used for drugs. The officer found more drug paraphernalia in Houghton’s purse which led to her arrest. Upon arrest Houghton challenged (Samaha 2012). This argument needs more clarification by law to clearly outline the circumstances under which the officer is allowed or not allowed to search the private bags of passengers in a vehicle. Also the description of the bright-line rule by the court is not satisfactory as it leaves some loops for criminals to escape being caught. I would recommend for a comprehensive law to regulate the extent to which the automobile search should be conducted. This law limits the search to only the containers found within the automobile while prohibiting the search of passengers in the vehicle thus allowing an opportunity for the persons in the car to conceal illegal objects or products.
