His personal experiences that were full of twists and near a death experience are what drove him to write these powerful lyrics. Previously Newton worked in the British Royal Navy service where he left and became involved in the slave trade (Turner, 2009). Newton grew up with no religious convictions, though he begged God for mercy when they encountered a violent storm that battered their vessel off the coast in Ireland. It is a moment that marked his conversion to Christianity. In 1764, he was ordained as Curate of Olney by the Church of England and it is where he wrote hymns with William Cowper. The word wretch in the second line shows self-acceptance as a sinner. It states "that saved a wretch like me! It is a point where most humans see themselves as miserable outcasts who have been enslaved by sin and have fallen far from Gods Glory.
