Sinnette, C. Schuur, J. A Qualitative Study of Factors Facilitating Clinical Nurse Engagement in Emergency Department Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Prevention.  JONA: The Journal of Nursing Administration, 46(10), 495-500. doi: 10. Participants The study was a qualitative study that utilized data and information from a previous study. It explored CAUTI prevention activities from 6 early adopting Eds and incorporated 532 interviews and 9 focus discussions. Purposive sampling was utilized to enrol the Eds. The sampling technique was feasible for the study as it allowed the study to identify and enrol Eds with the specific needed criteria required for the study. The sample enrolled was adequate to study the phenomenon which was further strengthened by the inclusion of multidisciplinary team members from the selected Eds. Findings The findings indicated that nurse leaders were critical in championing the prevention of CAUTI in the Eds.

Their actions in engaging the clinical staff nurses in CAUTI prevention played a significant role in promoting the prevention of CAUTI within the department. Discussion of the findings The findings were consistent with the initial preunderstanding of the study that the actions of nurse leaders were critical in prompting clinical nurses engagement in the participation in CAUTI prevention initiatives. The findings also found out the application of interdisciplinary engagement, empowerment and accountability were critical to preventing CAUTI, a finding that was not envisaged in the literature review or previous literature findings. Limitations The results from the study were from Eds with high performing Eds and cannot be applicable in other Eds with less effective Eds.  Canadian Journal of Infection Control, 33(1), 39-43.

Researcher pre-understandings The research describes the presence of an indwelling catheter as an increased risk of CAUTI. Data collection The project utilized statistical process control charts to monitor CAUTI events and the catheter device days. Credibility The credibility of the data collected was high as it was examined by the project team and all deviations both statistical and qualitative were noted and investigations instituted. Data analysis The researches do not provide a mention of the data analysis process during the project.

Findings The project established that there was a reduction in the Foley device utilization rate for indwelling catheter utilization and an increase in the use of external catheter devices. Discussion of the findings The findings were consistent with the expected findings on the utilization of the indwelling catheters. Analysis of the research The practice of transitioning evidence-based practice into care is a significant importance to the nursing practice. The evidence-based practice among others provides a sound and tested interventions through which a patient's quality of care can be enhanced. Evidence-based practice enables nurses and other medical care providers to achieve a standardized approach and manner of meeting the patient care needs within the care continuum. The utilization of evidence-based practice in care entails critiquing of research articles to ascertain their applicability in care noting the weaknesses and comparing the research to other previous research findings.

The process utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research articles to establish the basis for transiting into practice. This is unlike in quantitative study where the groups are allocated to a specific intervention of the research and cannot be flexible to study another phenomenon. Some of the disadvantages of qualitative research include the approach can be time-consuming and hectic to design and implement, the data gathered in a qualitative research can be highly subjective such as the interviewer can have undue influence on the respondent, the generalization of research can be limited when qualitative research techniques are employed among others. Quantitively research is advantageous as it can be used to compare outcomes, in Maxwell, Murphy & McGettigan, (2018) the research results were used to compare the changes in use of Foley catheter following education and before the intervention.

Researcher bias and influence of the researcher can be avoided through blinding and randomization and it can provide an easier to present and understand study results that are viable to practice across different environments. The disadvantages of quantitative studies are that the research designs can be complex and rigid not flexible to the changes can be expensive, time-consuming and requires large sample sizes. The use of quantitative research in practice is effective for the study and comparison of interventions. References Carter, E. Pallin, D. Mandel, L. Sinnette, C. Murphy, K.
