[Name] [Instructor] [Class] [Date] Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: Significance of the Title Tennessee Williams uses the title of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof as a metaphor representing both Margaret and what she does in the course of her life with Brick’s family. Margaret usually has to survive the emotional and physical torture of interacting with Brick’s family whose relationships are characterized with deceit and betrayal. Although she may want to leave in pursuit for a new environment in which there is more love honesty and peace she cannot leave because she would have to give up the life of opulence with which she had become accustomed. The importance of Margaret as the titular character in the play is that she is occasionally referred to as Maggie the Cat especially in reference in her ability to remain nimble and flexible enough to adapt to the conditions of the challenges the characters were facing in the 1950s they were not allowed to react in ways that were considered unacceptable; this results in the characters in the play feeling like cats on hot tin roofs. Some of the issues that were frowned upon by society at the time include homosexuality alcoholism and unemployment whereby the individual was blamed if he or she found oneself in any of them. In this case in addition to using the title to describe his characters in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Williams also used the title to protest against the folly of society at the time where an individual was held accountable for things over which he or she did not have any control. I would like this paper to break down the significance of the title while giving a brief summary of the play itself and Tennessee Williams. The paper should also discuss the social problems as it relates to the time period. The grade will be based on the depth of thought so please keep that in mind. The paper is 5 pages, but I also need an outline and bibliography.
