Critical book review

After reading a book "The Great Degeneration" by Niall Ferguson, you need to write a critical book review. Your review will convey the significance of the book and, in the process, enhance your understanding of the issues arising from the non-level playing field that defines the U.S. political process. The critical review should be no longer than 12 pages and no less than 10 (equivalent to double-spacing on 8.5 by 11 paper). Spelling and grammar matter, as does the clarity and organization of your writing. The paper must have a title page and a bibliography. All pages except the title page must be numbered. The title and bibliography do not count toward the page limit. A critical book review is more than a book review which simply summarizes the content of the book. Rather, a critical book review assess a book’s strengths and weaknesses, evaluates the goal(s) of a book and evaluates use of evidence while drawing on outside research sources to add both substance and depth to one’s review. In this regard, the critical book review aims to incorporate the variety of sources utilized in research papers while still allowing the reviewer to more directly engage themes within a specific text. Please Consider the Following: "Critical" does not mean negative. A good review does not have to be negative; it does have to be fair and analytical. While it is appropriate to relate whether or not you like the book, you must also tell your readers why you liked or disliked it. This is where your ability to integrate outside resources becomes crucial. In short, reactions to the book, either positive or negative, must be explained and supported. Being a Critical Reader In order to write a critical book review, you must be a critical reader. Ask questions of the book and note reactions as you read. Your book review then discusses those questions and reactions. A. Selection's topic, author and author's background Questions to ask: What is the author's major hypothesis; what's the purpose for writing this paper -what's the hook? What are the most important pieces of evidence to support it? B. Your objections/contrary views. Questions to ask: What is the quality of the evidence -- convincing? adequate? are the sources recognized by others in the field? Are there other works on the same or a similar topic? Does any of the author's information (or conclusion) conflict with other books you've read, courses you've taken or just previous assumptions you had of the subject? How might you resolve any conflict? C. Selection's impact on you and other potential readers. Questions to ask: Were any previous ideas you had on this subject changed or abandoned due to this book? were they reinforced? Would you recommend this book or article to others? Why?
