"Who's Irish?" by Gish Jen "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin "Brownies" by ZZ Packer "Good Country People" by Flannery O'Connor “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman * You may also use two pieces of literary criticism on one of the following short stories listed below if they adhere to all of the ten requirements (also see below). Literary criticism on these short stories may be more challenging to find: "The Location of the River" by Barry Lopez "How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie" by Junot Diaz "The Rememberer" by Aimee Bender "Indian Education" by Sherman Alexie Adhere to the following ten requirements: The articles you select must be from any of the following three databases found on the LAVC Electronic Library site: Artemis Literary Sources Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) Literature Resource Center The articles you select must be a minimum of 1,000 words. (The Word Count is listed.) If the article is off the word count by 100 words or so (i.e. 900 words), it is acceptable. Include the author’s full name, the title of the article and the thesis of the article in the opening few sentences of each summary. Write your summaries in third person point of view. Include the main points of the article in your own words. Follow the instructions for writing a summary found in the module material. Write the summaries in present tense. Include at least one quotation from each of the articles within your summary. Put the quotation in quotation marks and include the citation in MLA format. Write a sentence after the quotation explaining in your own words (still using third person point of view), what the quotation means. Limit your quotations to 10% of your submission (for example, if your submission is 450 words, keep your quotations to a total of 45 words or less). Use the MLA format for your quotations. [For those who need a refresher from English 101 days on MLA format, see pages 1593 – 1594 in your textbook. If you have any questions, please post in the Questions Forum so everyone can benefit from the responses.] Include a Works Cited list at the end of your submission with the two articles you summarized for this assignment. Entries in a Works Cited list should be in alphabetical order by the authors’ last names. [For more information on Works Cited lists, see pages 1594 – 1595 and pages 1603 – 1607 in your textbook for more information.] The source citation information can be found at the end of the article. For example: Source Citation Walker, Michael. "Boyle's 'Greasy Lake' and the Moral Failure of Postmodernism." Studies in Short Fiction 31.2 (Spring 1994): 247-255. Rpt. in Short Story Criticism. Ed. Jelena O. Krstovic. Vol. 127. Detroit: Gale, 2010. Literature Resource Center. Web. 12 Mar. 2015. Include the document URL found below the source citation at the end of the article. For example: Document URL http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?id=GALE|H1420094484&v=2.1&u=lavc_main&it=r&p=GLS&sw=w&asid=6dc5e6c24f295ca6c113002ca7386a22 Let your summaries be unique! Do not use a piece of literary criticism that has already been used twice. In other words, make sure to read through the discussion thread in advance to see if two classmates have already used your article. If you want to make sure to use the article you want, post early! Please note that there are no “reserved” or “saved” articles. You may only post your completed summaries. Thank you in advance for adhering to this class policy.
