Philosophy - Bayan , Term paper

Attached is the course material Ive used this semester. Attached is the assignment as well, but I will also write it here. Popular culture—in film and television, theater and music, novels and short stories, comics, advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, and so on—presents us with a steady stream of richly symbolic representations of the various broadly philosophical issues of the day. If you would like to accumulate “extra credit” toward your final grade, over and above the credit you will earn by completing your graded assignments, you may submit a serious essay on the relationship between some distinct and well-defined piece of popular culture and some distinct and well-defined aspect of the material we are addressing over the course of the semester. Your essay must be (i) at least three to four pages long (excluding plot summary and such), (ii) formatted to include your name, a descriptive title, double-spaced, twelve-point times-roman text, commonsense citations, and (iii) submitted using only the dedicated link in Assignments in Sakai, by the deadline specified there, and only in “Portable Document Format” (.pdf). Please understand that you’re being asked here to imagine much more than a simple “book report” or “movie review.” You may assume, that is, that I am familiar or will familiarize myself with the basic array of characters, plot lines, and the like, and so can and should avoid including extensive summaries thereof. The goal here is to explore instead the symbolic value of a particular aspect or limited number of aspects of the narrative you’ve chosen to address, in a way that, again, reflects substantively and in detail the material we are addressing over the course of the semester. Don’t just use this or that bit of popular culture as a platform to discuss this or that issue, but rather this or that specific and detailed symbolic aspect of the bit in question. If you were writing about a novel, say, as a relatively conventional bit of popular culture, you would be expected to discuss analytically specific passages and themes. The same applies here. As per our course policies, extra-credit work will not be graded numerically, and so will not influence your grade directly as such. Under the right circumstances, however, extra-credit work may influence it indirectly. That is if it is done well, and if your graded assignments put you on the cusp numerically of a higher overall letter grade (if, for example, your overall numerical grade is an 89 percent of full credit, and an A at Rutgers is typically earned by folks with 90 percent and above), then extra-credit work may under these circumstances help to boost your letter grade to the next available one (from a C to a C+, for example, a C+ to a B, a B to a B+, or, though less typically, from a B+ to an A). Please not that this is not a replacement for regularly active participation in class discussions, without which it’s much less, if at all, likely to help you. You may submit extra-credit work more than once if you like, but should beware of the “done well” requirement above. If the quality of your individual submissions appears to suffer for the sake multiple submissions, that is, then together they will count much less, if at all. Before you multiply your submissions, then, you should take care to be sure that on each individual occasion you’ve done as good and comprehensive a job as can reasonably be expected. It’s far better, in other words, here and in general, to sacrifice quantity for quality, than quality for quantity. Indicative examples of this sort of exploration can be found, for instance, in the archives of WNYC’s Studio 360’s “American Icons,” at http://www.studio360.org/americanicons, and also at http://rci.rutgers.edu/~tripmcc/phil/popular_culture_and_philosophy. Please note. — Extra-credit work is in no way necessary to securing a respectable grade.
