Document Preview:

The Amphiteatrun Flavium as put by the ancient Romans to mean The Colosseum is a large arena constructed in the first century CE under three Roman emperors of the Flavian dynasty. Vespasian (69-79 CE) Titus (79-81 CE) and Dominitian (81-96 AD) the final stages of construction however were done during the reign of Titus brother Domitian. The arena hosted public entertainment ceremonies like wild animal hunts gladiator fights and even showcased public executions from 80 CE to 404 CE. Its construction began in 72 CE on a land that was once a lake and Emperor Nero’s Golden House garden. The lake was drained and as early as it was an engineering fete was revealed when they laid down concrete foundations six meters down to mitigate the risk of an earthquake. The main building purpose of construction was to restore Rome’s former glory from the blow of a civil war. (Routledge 1989). Bibliography D. L.
