Jefferson’s attorney attempts to defend him by referring to him as “it”. He states that the uneducated young man lacked the intelligence to plot and executes a robbery. Additionally, the attorney who is white attempts to convince the jury that Jeffery was just like an animal. He states that executing the young man would be like placing "a hog in the electric chair. " Despite the belittling “defense” by his attorney, the all-white jury sentences the young man to death by electrocution. They visit Henri Pichot hopping he would persuade his brother-in-law, the sheriff, to allow Grant pay Jefferson regular visits. The sheriff later approves their request and Grant is permitted to visit Jefferson while in custody as he awaits his execution date to be set by the governor.
